Movie mission: Seeing the nominees

» Read similar stories filed under:

I'm a list maker. In the months before the Oscars, that means I make a list of all the movies people are predicting will be nominated (in all categories except foreign films, short films and documentaries) and start trying to check them off the list.

The movies I probably won't like ('Crazy Heart,' I'm talking to you) or that will make me cry ('Precious') are saved for the very end of the season.

Tonight's movie is "A Single Man," which received three Golden Globe nominations.

To add a level of difficulty, this year, I'm on a little bit of a weight-loss kick, so if I lose at least one pound each week, I'm putting a little money aside. If there's enough money by Oscar day, I want to buy a new TV for my red carpet viewing.

I'm still working on which movies to see in which order. Any favorites out there? At this point, I'm looking at the following (mostly Golden Globe nominees and winners). The list will change when the Oscar nominations come out on Feb. 2.

(R means it is or will be available for rental, M means I've got plans to see it on the calendar, E means it's an emergency because I'm worried it might not be in theaters long and it's not coming out on video in time, SEEN obviously means - seen it.)

I saw Avatar and loved it. See it in 3-D though! The visuals are outstanding and the storyline interesting -- remindful of the experience of the Native Americans in this country.

I don't consider it one of the best movies I have ever seen, but a good one to see -- and one to see on the big screen.

Heard Avatar sucks...

Heard the visual effects are as great as heralded but the acting and screenplay stink. (Big surprise from James Cameron, eh?)

I think Sandra Bullock is my "Eddie Murphy" this year. You know what I mean.

I think you just don't like Jeff Bridges - If Mickey Rourke were in Crazy Heart I bet you'd be all over it. It sounds like a good story.

Go Vikings! (Sorry - That was off topic.)

Didn't mean to be anonymous (And Go Vikings again!)

Don't get to the theater often...

I've seen Inglourious Basterds, Up, Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox. I loved Up and Fox. The only movies I usually see are those a four-year-old could enjoy. Will you give us your ratings? What's worth renting? And good luck on the new TV!

See 'Up in the Air'...

If you only make it to one pre-Oscar film, so far I'd highly recommend Up in the Air, but I haven't seen Avatar yet (am I the only one who hasn't?). I'd recommend 500 Days of Summer as a good renter.
