Watching the Oscars

» Read similar stories filed under:

I'm excited for Oscar night tonight! A late-night viewing of "The Blind Side" brought the Oscar night menu together. I came close on my mission. But, never made it to "Imaginarium" and didn't secure a copy of "In the Loop."

However, I thought it was a really great year for movies, and left more of the Oscar-nominated films with a smile than in recent years.

I'd love to hear your comments about Oscar night!

Here's tonight's Oscar menu:

Movie mission: Almost there

I saw "Crazy Heart" on Monday, and I have to admit, my hatred for Jeff Bridges shrunk one size that day.

I'd give Crazy Heart a full Downey Jr. (which is 3 stars). I liked the movie. I laughed, I cringed. It should definitely win for best song. "The Weary Kind," is important to the movie and it's a good song.

Movie mission: The last people who saw Avatar

OK, so I've been falling down on the blog over here. As I'm inching closer to completing my movie mission, and as Oscar night looms in a mere two weeks, here's a look at a few of the action movies that have been crossed off the list.

This might be the perfect date movie

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I have to recommend "The Young Victoria" as an excellent choice for a date movie.

Emily Blunt as Victoria and Rupert Friend as Prince Albert are very enjoyable. The always entertaining Paul Bettany is the twinkling Lord Melbourne.

Michelle, Kim, Jennifer and I saw this at the Edina Cinema, which has popcorn with real butter and a lovely ambiance. Jennifer recognized the dastardly Sir John Conroy as Mark Strong right away. She also joined me in sobbing at the end of the movie (it was a good cry).

Oscar nominees: Which movies are now at the top of the list?

» Read similar stories filed under:

So the Oscar nominees have altered the Movie Mission list, but I'm feeling pretty positive about our Oscar viewing so far.

Performance by an actor in a leading role.
Jeff Bridges in "Crazy Heart"
George Clooney in "Up in the Air"
Colin Firth in "A Single Man"
Morgan Freeman in "Invictus"
Jeremy Renner in "The Hurt Locker"
I'm hoping for a win for Jeremy Renner from 'The Hurt Locker.'

Performance by an actor in a supporting role.
Matt Damon in "Invictus"
Woody Harrelson in "The Messenger"
Christopher Plummer in "The Last Station"
Stanley Tucci in "The Lovely Bones"

Movie mission: Parkway theater

Saw "Nine" last weekend at The Parkway Theater in Minneapolis (http://theparkwaytheater.com/), which I had never visited before.

The first thing I saw was the awesome movie poster (pictured above) on the wall!

This is a fun venue because the first few rows are leather couches, where you can lounge and watch your show. And you can bring in food and beverages from the restaurant next door. I didn't do that, of course, but I was glad to know I could have.

A note on the Screen Actors Guild Awards

» Read similar stories filed under:

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are tonight on TNT and TBS - http://www.sagawards.org/. In the Central time zone I believe they're on at 7, with a half hour red carpet intro on TNT. E should have red carpet coverage from 5-7.

You can follow the awards on Twitter -http://twitter.com/sagawards - and find them on Facebook.

'An Education' gets a 'Half-Depp'

So, you might have been expecting a review of "A Single Man," since that's what I said I was planning to see in my blog. Well, all didn't go exactly as planned, so we saw "An Education" instead.

Both movies were at about the same level on my Movie Mission list. We saw it at the Landmark Edina Cinema.

Even before the movie started, I had some trepidation about how to review it. And how to rank the movies once I had watched them. I didn't want to use stars, although that actually makes sense.

Movie mission: Seeing the nominees

» Read similar stories filed under:

I'm a list maker. In the months before the Oscars, that means I make a list of all the movies people are predicting will be nominated (in all categories except foreign films, short films and documentaries) and start trying to check them off the list.

The movies I probably won't like ('Crazy Heart,' I'm talking to you) or that will make me cry ('Precious') are saved for the very end of the season.

Tonight's movie is "A Single Man," which received three Golden Globe nominations.
